The ASW 15 was the last model produced during Alexander Schleicher’s lifetime. Six days after its first flight on 26 April 1968, the founder and kingpin of the Alexander Schleicher factory passed away. The prototype of the ASW 15 still had a fixed wheel which, however, was replaced with a retractable wheel after the standard class regulations had been changed. Standard class sailplanes were also later allowed to carry water ballast, leading to the ASW 15 B which had a reinforced spar for this purpose.
